POZ Review: Falling In Reverse - Fashionably Late

At their core, album reviews serve a very simple purpose. There are some in-depth descriptions, some metaphors, a few comparisons to the artist’s previous work, hopefully some well-written sentences and paragraphs, and all that jazz. But an album review comes down to one question: should you listen to the album in question, or not?

If you are reading this review because you’re trying to figure out if you should listen to Fashionably Late, the new album by Falling In Reverse, the simple answer, (which you hopefully already know) is no. If you want the specific details about why it’s one of the worst albums to come out in recent memory, strap yourself into whatever chair you’re sitting in: it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

Fashionably Late is the second album from Falling In Reverse, a band that was supposed to be the phoenix that emerged from Ronnie Radke’s not-so-amicable departure from Escape the Fate. The band released the cheesy, arena-rock ripoff The Drug in Me Is You in 2011, and since then has somehow rose at an alarming and frustrating pace. This has had a profound effect on Radke’s ego, as this chore of an album contains 11 tracks of Radke explaining just how awesome it is to be Ronnie Radke. He’s not even bashful about it in the song titles, as the tracklist boasts song names like “Champion” and “Born to Lead.” There are also attempts to make Radke seem like a relatable journeyman on “Rolling Stone” and “Drifter.”

Though these tracks are an attempt at some sort of sincerity, they immediately miss the mark thanks to tracks about cheating on a significant other with all of their friends (“Fashionably Late”), feeling like your life is a video game (“Game Over,” complete with actual Super Mario sound effects!), and an attempt to throw a new spin on YOLO (“Fuck the Rest”). Fashionably Late finds Falling in Reverse trying to meld their arena-metal with electronic effects, hip-hop beats, and powerpop choruses (“Bad Girls Club” in particular sounds like the worst song Metro Station never wrote), and the result is an album that has no clear direction or cohesion.

He’s a bad guy. He did fucking jail time because he was involved with a murder. Have you listened to his lyrics? Have you heard the music he’s creating? Ok, the music may be a bit subjective, but, come on. If you ever, for some reason, catch yourself thinking “Wow, Ronnie Radke seems pretty cool” just fucking remember that he killed a person, and then made a music video where he ghost rides a Ferrari.

Also, it’s not original in the slightest. Rap/Metal has been done. If you don’t want to go back as far as the anthrax/public enemy mash up, you still have limp bizkit. Later? Linkin Park, P.O.D (kinda), and even later? *Shudder* Brokencyde (spelling? whatever.)

So, there. Nothing new. Nothing revolutionary. Just a shitty singer making shittier recycled music. And he fucking killed someone. Fuck this band entirely.

People on Long Island have such a shitty attitude when it comes to cars. All I see are people bitching about one thing or another. “This dude copied me!” or “Why are you asking me how to get a sponsorship? Work hard bro, I didn’t ask any questions, I just did it.”

First of all, wasn’t there a time when you were new around here? Answer the damn kid’s questions. If everyone just wrote me off when I started, I probably wouldn’t have stuck around. Also, as far as people biting your style goes, just fucking get over yourself. You drive a new car, there’s only so many ways you can go with it. You know what I said when I went to a show in Jersey and saw someone with my body kit and wheels? “Yo, we should take a picture of our cars together! I dig your style!”

Why be shitty? Aren’t we all here for the same reasons? Look, if you’re in it to shut up the “haters” or to just show the fuck off, get your head out of your ass. People need to understand it’s about doing something for yourself. It feels good to know that your car is something that you put together, that you worked on. It feels good to remember getting together with great friends with a common goal. And that goal should never be to take home a trophy. Sure, it feels good, but what does it matter? The point is that it’s fun, and I feel like a lot of people here have lost sight of that. If you don’t spend 3 grand on wheels, it’s like you’re fucking up. Do what you think looks good, and do it for yourself. Encourage the newcomers, go have fun, and don’t worry about showing up somebody else. Remember that we’re in this together, it’s not a fucking competition.
